Made in North Korea: Graphics From Everyday Life in the DPRK

Back to cultural engagement

North Korea uncensored and unfiltered

Koryo's best selling Phaidon book chronicles the surprising and unusual world of North Korean graphic design.

This collection of everyday ephemera – from hotel brochures to luggages tags to tinned food – is the result of Koryo Tours' founder Nicholas Bonner's decades of travel in the country. Since 1993, Bonner has obsessively collected scraps of everyday life that are at once innocuous and illuminating. In a country free of commercial advertising, you would expect labels and packaging to be purely descriptive, yet Made in North Korea reveals that these daily items provide an extraordinary insight into the creative world of North Korean designers, and the lives of ordinary North Koreans.

The collection has been exhibited at the House of Illustration and at Hongik University in Seoul – the latter was the first exhibition of North Korean design ever to appear publicly in South Korea.
