En route to the hotel stop off at the Arch of Triumph - similar to the French version (but bigger) - commemorates the liberation from Japanese rule and Mansudae Grand Monument - statue of DPRK President Kim Il Sung. Check in hotel. MASS GAMES after dinner

AM: Charter Flight (1 hr) to Mount Paekdu - Korea’s highest mountain and sacred birthplace of the entire Korean nation, arrive at Samji Airport, drive to mountain, ascend to peak
PM: Lake Chon - highest crate lake in the world sitting atop Mount Paekdu, cable car from the crater rim to the lake itself, Secret Camp - the site of the HQ of Kim Il Sung’s anti-Japanese guerrilla army, slogan trees and birthplace of Kim Jong Il, drive to hotel

AM: Samjiyon Regional Museum - exhibits and models of the area, shows the scale of the activities of the guerrillas in the 1930s, Schoolchildren’s Palace - local centre of excellence for children, Samjiyon Grand Monument - the largest set of statues in the country laid out in the area where the guerrilla army gathered to launch a crucial attack, the centrepiece is a bronze statue of the commander Kim Il Sung
PM: Charter flight (1 hour) to Pyongyang - Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum (Korean War Museum) – see the DPRK’s version of events of this conflict, War Victory Monuments, Paradise Department Store and microbrewery OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang
Tues 10th Aug
AM: Drive to Kaesong (2 hrs), Panmunjom/DMZ, Where North and South face-off across the central military demarcation line, Kaesong Koryo Museum, an old Confucian college
PM: Jannamsan Park and pavilion for views of the old town, Return to Pyongyang, USS Pueblo, captured American spy ship, Pyongyang Metro for extended ride on the deepest subway system in the world

AM: Drive to Wonsan, across the country, stopping at scenic spots for rest and photos
PM: Wonsan City Port, with Kim Il Sung Statue, Songdowon Schoolchildren’s Camp, where DPRK’s kids spend their summers, Wonsan Revolutionary Museum, walk around the city central square areaOVERNIGHT: Tongmyong Hotel, Wonsan
Thurs 12th Aug
AM: To Hamhung (2.5hrs) – become the very first tour group ever to go to this city, DPRK’s second largest, Central city park with statue and pavilions, mingle with relaxing locals who will never have seen foreigners before
PM: Hamhung Grand Theatre – the largest building in the city, towers over the surrounding area, local recreation park, kids and old people relaxing here in bucolic surroundings, good chance to take in some local flavour, Home of Ri Song Gye, first King of the Li Dynasty, Hungnam Fertiliser Factory – see the place where Kim Il Sung’s quote “rice is communism” was made, local seaside and beach area in Majon (* US citizens are not permitted to spend the night in Hamhung so any US tourists in this group will return to Wonsan in the evening)

Fri 13th Aug
AM: Return to Wonsan via Tongbong co-operative farm – see how the farming system in DPRK works at this model farm frequently visited by Kim Jong Il (* US tourists in Wonsan will visit the Agricultural University in Wonsan until the rest of the group arrives at lunchtime)
PM: Drive down the East Coast to a local beach for an afternoon of relaxation (well earned after all the ground covered so far!), swimming in the sea, walking along the beach etc is all possible here, proceed on to Lake Sijung

Sat 14th Aug
AM: Drive to Outer Kumgang – previously a resort operated by Hyundai for visiting South Korean tourists, newly opened to visitors from the Northern side, you’ll be the first tour group to make this journey also, stunning scenery as the road winds its way through Korea’s most beautiful mountain range. Samil Lagoon for light hiking and sightseeing, islands and pavilions abound
PM: Guided hike in Kumgangsan, see the famous peaks and valleys that Hyundai paid hundreds of millions of $ for access to, evening long drive to return to Pyongyang for a late arrival

AM: DPRK HOLIDAY: Liberation Day – anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese rule in 1945. Kumsusan Memorial Palace - Mausoleum where President Kim Il Sung lies in state, Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery - bronze busts of the Koreans who died fighting the Japanese occupation, Juche Tower - 150m stone tower with lookout platform at the top and great panoramic views of the city
PM: Local funfair and Moranbong Park - where the people of Pyongyang go to enjoy their holiday, Kim Il Sung Square - the middle of the capital, see where the parades take place, Golden Lane Bowling Centre – for a 10-pin fix with the locals, expected Mass Dance on Kim Il Sung square in the evening, fireworks are expected

Mon 16th Aug
AM: Train from Pyongyang departs at 10:10AM (*US tourists must exit by plane in the afternoon so in the morning the program will include Mansudae Art Studio, Mangyongdae Native House, and a picnic at Mt. Ryonggak on the outskirts of Pyongyang before transfer to the airport for 17:20 flight to Beijing)
PM: Cross border at Sinuiju/Dandong

AM: Arrive Beijing 08:34AM. End of tour.
